Instead, we will be working from the "root" subfolder. In the online simulator, we are not assigned a user account in the home directory. Online linux simulator directory structure Within the linux simulator we'll be using, the directory structure looks like this: Other directories are created below the root directory - typically, you will find a "bin" directory, which contains binary files required for commands and processes like those we'll cover next, as well as a "tmp" directory for temporary files, and directories like "home" that contain information for individual users. The root directory is the top level, and is denoted by a slash (/). The rest of the tutorial will introduce you to the file structures in Unix, how to navigate them, and how to use many common commands and programs to efficiently perform the work you need to accomplish.Ĭommand Line Environment Directory Structure and NavigationĮverything in a Unix environment spreads outward from a single "root" directory, much like a tree trunk and its branches. Additionally, you can then list the photos in the directory, rename them one at a time or all at once, move them to other directories or even other computers, or much more - all by just typing a few characters. # cd /docs/personal/photos/2015/marchĪlthough you can't see your photos as icons here, the computer is performing exactly the same actions as you did by clicking on all those folders. In Unix, you'd simply type the following at the command line to perform the same task: "cd /docs/personal/photos/2015/march". Typical PC desktop environment showing folder structure How do you get into March 2015's photo area? Easy - you keep clicking on or touching the appropriate folder, until it opens the next, and then the next folders until you can see March 2015 - then you click on it. Let's say you have "personal" and "schoolwork" subfolders in there, and that inside your personal folder you have a subfolder with your photos from 2015, and that they're arranged into monthly subfolders. Suppose you have a folder called "docs" on your personal computer, phone or stored in a cloud somewhere. When the copying is finished, the shell returns you to the prompt and awaits more commands. The shell will search for the program "cp" and then tell the kernel to run that program on If you want to copy a file named "file1" and name the copy "file2", you would enter "cp file1 file2" at the command line. One example of how the shell and kernel work together is copying a file. All shells support similar basic functions. For example, the "csh" shell listed in the image above is called "C shell" and has syntax similar to the C programming language. There are several different shells, and syntax and shortcuts vary between them. The commands that you enter are programs themselves, so once the work is done, the command line will return to a prompt and await further input. The shell is an interface that interprets the command line input and calls the necessary programs to do the work. The kernel ingests user input via the shell and accesses the hardware to perform things like memory allocation and file storage. The kernel and shell are the heart and soul of the operating system. Unix architecture, from general user applications you'd find on any desktop computer down through the command line and to the central hardware Unix is made up of 3 main parts: the kernel, the shell, and user commands and applications. Moog initiated an effort along with other aerospace suppliers to explore the application of blockchain technology in their supply chain. Moog also provided a similar system for the No1 Court at Wimbledon. It was engineered by Moog's UK facility and enabled the Centre Court's only night-time tennis performance. This consisted of about 150 axes of AC servo-controlled electric actuators, AC servomotors, AC servodrives and the complete motion control system, including software. Moog provided a control and motion system for the Wimbledon Centre Court retracting roof. Moog also made servo-actuators for four Space Shuttles. Moog also worked on several space contracts and designed part of the liquid rocket engine propulsion systems on the Voyager space probes and provided thruster valves that steered the spacecraft. Moog's design was adapted to form the Spider-Man ride at Universal Studios adventure theme park. Moog also contributed to the manufacture and development of both hydraulic and electric flight simulators. Moog provided products and technologies that were used on the B-2 Bomber and were also responsible for the flight control actuation system. The US patent 2625136 was issued in January 1953. In April 1950 Bill Moog (cousin of Robert Moog, inventor of the Moog synthesizer) applied for a patent for the electrohydraulic servo valve (later called a "Moog Valve"), a device to control hydraulic pressure for fine control of actuators. Moog is headquartered in Elma, New York and has sales, engineering, and manufacturing facilities in twenty-six countries. The company operates under four segments: aircraft controls, space and defense controls, industrial controls, and components. These tend to result in an intensely astringent, unpleasant and puckering mouthfeel, which can easily mar the “juicy” profile that is being sought after. In short, as the beer sits in contact for long periods with extremely large volumes of mushy hop matter, in a fermenter or brite tank, it slowly leeches polyphenols into the final product. This is why “hop burn” was unknown in earlier styles of IPA, which may have employed dry hopping techniques, but in much more restrained ways, while deriving most of their hop flavors from hops added during the boil. Hop burn is believed to be caused through excessive contact time between the vegetative matter of hops and the beer-something that wasn’t a problem during earlier eras of traditional IPA brewing, but became very common in the hazy IPA era due to the normalization of massive, long dry hopping periods. Today, the driving forces behind hop burn are better understood: It’s generally believed that this intensely astringent, drying, corrosive sensation is caused by chemical compounds called polyphenols, which are unsurprisingly present in hops. At that time, the mere existence of “hop burn,” and the phrase itself, were just coming to be widely acknowledged, though it’s something that has plagued many IPAs ever since the hazy/juicy revolution began. What is “hop burn”? Well, it’s something I’ve written about at length before, and an issue that has particularly been bothering me since I wrote this piece way back in 2019. For the first time, these definitions now acknowledge the single biggest problem that the hazy IPA style has contended with in recent years: hop burn. The 2022 Style Guidelines are actually notable, meanwhile, for the fact that they don’t introduce any new styles this time around-but a subtle tweak to the entries for several varieties of hazy India pale ale are still quite significant. On any given year, the headlines generated by the style guidelines update typically revolve around the introduction of new styles, or tweaks to the descriptions of iconic beer styles-changes that are not “definitive” by any means, but important in the sense that these guidelines serve as judging criteria for each year’s Great American Beer Festival, the country’s largest annual beer competition. Finally, dry hopped with El Dorado and Mandarina Bavaria that fill in nicely to layer the beets with ripe aromatics of tangerine and pear.Today, the Colorado-based Brewers Association, the trade group for the American independent beer industry, released its yearly update to the living document that is its beer style guidelines. Fermentation underwent a extended period at higher temperatures, resulting in a dry beer with a complex profile and a firm bitterness. The beets give way to delicate aromas of freshly plowed earth and a touch of funk. It pours a beautiful red hue that’s attributed to the use of fresh beets during conditioning. However, the solution is to install Apache 2.4 via Homebrew and then configure it to run on the standard ports (80/443). The latest macOS 13.0 Ventura comes with Apache 2.4 pre-installed, however, it is no longer a simple task to use this version with Homebrew because Apple has removed some required scripts in this release. After a brief fight with her fellow witch, Jeanne leaves without saying a word. Jeanne and Cereza, now known as Bayonetta, first meet each other again when a plane full of Laguna (summoned by the self-sacrifice of Vigridian noblemen, which Jeanne witnessed) falls into Bayonetta and Enzo's position. Despite having been an ally in the past, she is forced to both fight Cereza and lead her to her "fate". In the altered timeline, Cereza wore her Umbran Watch close to her heart as a result, the dagger did not pierce her and Cereza stayed to fight the angels with Jeanne.ĥ00 years after the Witch Hunts and sealing Cereza away, Jeanne was brainwashed by Balder to work for the forces of Paradiso. Jeanne faces the oncoming horde of Angels alone. Seeing this, Jeanne used a special dagger to impale Cereza and seal her away along with her memories. Upon reaching a room full of slain Witches, with Rosa among them, Cereza lost her will to fight. During the combat trial, the Angels of Paradiso attacked the clan and both Jeanne and Cereza teamed up to fight them. Despite it being forbidden at the Umbran Elder's insistence, she chose her friend, Cereza, as her opponent. As part of her final trial, she had to engage combat with another Witch of the clan. As an adult, Jeanne was next in line to lead the Umbra Witches. 14.4 Dx2 Shin Megami Tensei: LiberationĪs a child, Jeanne met the outcast of the Umbran clan, Cereza, and formed a strong friendship and bond her.2.4 Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.Along with Bayonetta and Viola, she is playable throughout Bayonetta 3, but only in her Spy Action chapters, Phenomenal Remnant chapters, as well as when facing Rodin or the Golem. Jeanne is the primary playable character in the final chapter of Bayonetta, and can be unlocked post-game to play in the main story. However, she is saved and helps both Bayonetta and a past Balder travel to Fimbulventr and defeat Loptr. She is threatened to be lost in Inferno and consumed by the Infernal Demon, Alraune. In the second game, Jeanne's soul is captured by the demons of Inferno after saving Bayonetta from being struck by Gomorrah. Īfter Jubileus' defeat, she returns to being a high school teacher and vigilante who defends her students in her spare time in addition to hanging out with Bayonetta. She worked alongside him in order to bring forth Bayonetta's memory and eventually becomes her ally after breaking free of Balder's control. ĥ00 years later, Jeanne was revealed to have been captured by Balder's forces and subjected to mental reprogramming from his magical abilities. Befriending her during their childhood, Jeanne was responsible for sealing away Bayonetta during the Witch Hunts to foil the corrupted Balder's plan of resurrecting Jubileus, The Creator, during the Festival of Resurrection. Jeanne is the former heiress to the Umbra Witches and Bayonetta's best friend. For with every truth, there is another one to be seen. The oft-used gunslinger phrase is sort of a sci-fi version of the email opening, “I hope you’re doing well.” Long days means that you hope the person you’re speaking with is healthy, and you’re letting them know that you wish them longevity, or “a life of great duration.” Tacking on the pleasant nights implies that you hope that their time on Earth is enjoyable, as the word pleasant means “pleasing, agreeable, and giving pleasure.” Using long days and pleasant nights as a greeting can be a perfect way to say hello while simultaneously wishing someone well. “Oh wow, well, I wish you good tidings then.”Ī greeting with well wishes built in: long days and pleasant nightsįans of Stephen King’s Dark Towe r series will recognize this phrase. “I had my blood drawn last week, and now we just play the waiting game.” For example, it would be a perfect phrase for someone expecting medical test results. If you’re looking to bring back this once common phrase in place of good luck, it would be best to use it when talking to someone who is awaiting news. The word tidings has been around since before 1100, and comes from the Middle and Old English word t?dung. Wishing someone good (or glad) tidings was once a common way to tell them you were hoping they were going to receive good news, but these days the phrase is largely relegated to holiday music (still humming: “ Oh tidings of comfort and joy … COMFORT AND JOY … ”). If you hear the word tidings- which means “news, information, or intelligence”-and you automatically start singing Christmas carols (hum the opening lines with me: “ God rest ye merry gentlemen …”), then you’re not alone. On hoping for good news: I wish you good (or glad) tidings Make sure you’re expressing exactly what you mean in every circumstance! So what should you say instead?Ĭheck out this slideshow of nine things to say instead of the well-worn phrases good luck and congratulations. And in some instances, saying “congratulations” can be the exact wrong thing to say. Did your sister just find out that she is pregnant after 10 years of trying? Congratulations may not encapsulate all of the things you want to say. Similarly, some experiences are so momentous that a simple congratulations does not meet the magnitude of the occasion. For example, if you find out you and a colleague are both up for the same promotion and you simply say, “Good luck,” it may sound like you mean the exact opposite. Sometimes using them can feel disingenuous-” lacking in frankness and sincerity-or hypocritical. Upon hearing good news, your first impulse is likely to say, “ Congratulations“-which is used “to express joy in the success or good fortune of another.” Or you might wish someone “ good luck“ -which means “good fortune.” But those two phrases are not always the best options. How to avoid well-worn phrases like "good luck" and "congratulations" As compared with their location on the B-47, the outrigger wheels are positioned much nearer the wingtip on the B-52. Air Force iconic B-52 bomber was designed in such a way the landing gear can be set up to 20 degrees left to right of centerline for both takeoff and landing.Īs explained by NASA (that has been a BUFF operator) on its website, “the landing gear of the B-52 is of the same bicycle arrangement as employed on the B-47 but has four two-wheel bogies instead of the two bogies used on the earlier aircraft. Here’s a description of the characteristic swiveling landing gear of the B-52 from a previous article: You can clearly see the lights “fall victim” to the the outrigger wheel, designed to keep the wing tanks from skidding on the runway. The video below, taken by our friend Misael Ocasio Hernandez, shows the full display of the B-52 including the taxi part. Interestingly, during the “crabwalk”, the outrigger wheel of the Stratofortress aircraft hit some of the runway lights (18). The most impressive part of the display (most probably cut short because of the weather that affected RIAT throughout the weekend) came after landing, as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fellow) taxied down the runway using its peculiar steerable dual-bicycle landing gear to face the strong crosswinds at RAF Fairford. 16, 2023, was airframe 61-0029/BD belonging to the 307th Bomb Wing/93rd Bomb Squadron, an Air Reserve Component of the United States Air Force, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.įlying as SURGE 22, the strategic bomber took from runway 27, spent some time in a holding to the east of the airfield then carried out a flypast with tanker KC-135R QID 71 from Mildenhall in the lead and eventually returned for an overhead break for a visual landing. Two white lights and 2 red lights mean you’re on the established glide path on a PAPI.After its display at RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo), the B-52 Stratofortress bomber hit 18 runway lights with the outrigger wheel.Īs usual, one of the highlights of RIAT 2023’s flying display this year was the U.S. The visual approach path of the PAPI generally provides safe obstruction clearance within plus or minus ten degrees of the extended runway centerline and to 3.4 NM from the runway threshold. These lights are visible from about five miles during the day and up to twenty miles at night. PAPIs use lights similar to the VASI, but are installed in a single row of either two or four light units. The precision approach path indicator (PAPI) is another quite common visual glide path indicator light. Although normal glide path angles are three degrees, VASI lights at some airports may be as high as 4.5 degrees to grant proper obstacle clearance. If you see two red lights over two white lights, you’re on the approach path. The visual approach path of the VASI provides safe obstruction clearance within plus or minus ten degrees of the extended runway centerline and to four NM from the runway threshold. These lights are visible from 3-5 miles throughout the day and up to twenty miles or more at night. The Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) is a system of lights arranged to supply visual descent guidance information throughout the approach to a runway for VFR and IFR pilots. |
